Hooded reaper skull

Rendered dread built from real anatomy — the skull is drawn from the bone out, then the hood is cut around it so the two read as one object rather than a motif laid over a shape.

The concept arrived as a rough idea rather than a finished picture, which is the normal starting point. Consultation set the frame first: how much of the chest the piece could hold, and which way the hood should run against the line of the collarbone.

Execution is black and gray throughout — value and contrast doing the work that colour would otherwise be asked to do. The skull is carried on value alone, with the deepest blacks reserved for the eye sockets so the focal point never moves.

The purple stencil transfer for this piece was photographed on the skin before the first line went in, and it is published on this page. A stencil is the last point at which placement is still free to move, which is why it gets approved on the body rather than on paper.
