What the research says
techniques- Category
- linework
- Visual traits
- A continuous mark of even weight; the artefacts it is judged on are wobble, breaks and inconsistent thickness.
- Scale behavior
- Needle size sets line thickness directly: “The larger the number, the more sharps in the needle, and the thicker the line it’ll produce.”
- Execution notes
- The needle travels along the line, never across it: “However, you’ll always want to keep the needle at an angle with the skin, and move the needle cartridge in the direction of the line.” Long lines are joined so the seam does not read: “you need to “flick” the needle up so that the line comes to a tapered point”. Tool: “When you’re lining, you’ll almost always use a Round Liner.”
- Tattooability notes
- The source names straightness as the hard part, not speed: “Unfortunately, straight lines are also one of the hardest things to master in tattooing.”
- Conflicts or cautions
- Distinct from technique_linework, which is one source's narrower ornamental-context sense. Distinct from style_fine_line, which is a look; this row is the deposition of a line at any weight.
Provenance
1 resolvedTattooing 101
Professional tattoo-education page covering lining, packing and shading as separable skills. It defines packing by outcome - ““Packing” in ink means filling in a section of skin with a single color or pure black ink.” - and by hand motion, and states the trauma constraint that bounds every multi-pass technique: “each pass over the skin causes more trauma to the skin”. Also the source for lining, line weight, riding the tube, floating the needle, bloodlining, graylining and colour order, which are written in a later tranche of this same batch. IMPORTANT LIMIT: Tier 2 trade education; execution claims only.

Promoted from motifs_seed.composition_behaviors of motif_banner ('small breaks and tears are recommended over long unbroken lines') [class ET]. Direction follows the packs: source is the technique (doc 01, specimen rel_0005). Provenance inherited from the parent row(s): source_tattooing101_banners; source_historic_dockyard_tattoos; the first is carried in source_id. No new fact: this edge restates a value already present in the corpus.
