Banner

A ribbon-like banner carrying lettering. THE BEST-DESCRIBED AND LEAST-INTERPRETED ROW IN SUB-BATCH C: an entire Tier 2 drawing guide is devoted to it and not one sentence of it says what a banner means. It is described as near-universal equipment - “As a tattoo artist, you’ll use banners and lettering in your work all the time.” - and the guide's test for whether the form reads at all is a construction one: “Make sure to draw in the back of your banner so it’s clear that it’s a banner and not just a shape with words inside.” A Tier 1 maritime museum independently attests the combination form, an anchor “with a name in a banner”. NO SYMBOLIC EDGE. A banner is a CARRIER: what it means is whatever is written inside it, which is lettering and therefore T11.9's, not the banner's.

Category
decorative
Variants
single banner; multiple connected banners; banner with breaks and tears
Common styles
american traditional; neo traditional
Common themes
memorial; identity
Composition behaviors
built from three guide lines - top edge, bottom edge, and a middle line that sets how the lettering moves; the back of the banner is drawn and shaded so the form reads as a banner rather than a shape with words in it; an element passing through it, such as a dagger, hides most of the back; small breaks and tears are recommended over long unbroken lines

  • Tattooing 101

Trade education drawing guide. THE WHOLE PAGE IS CONSTRUCTION AND NOT MEANING, which is why the motif it supports ships with no symbolic edge. Verbatim on ubiquity: “As a tattoo artist, you’ll use banners and lettering in your work all the time.” On construction: “You’ll always want to start with 3 lines to sketch out the shape of the banner.” and “The top and bottom lines will be the edges of your banner, and the middle of the line helps show how your lettering should move.” On what makes the form read as a banner: “Make sure to draw in the back of your banner so it’s clear that it’s a banner and not just a shape with words inside.” On combination: “If there’s something going through your banner in the design, like a dagger , the back part will mostly be hidden.” The spiral appears here as a construction device - “make a spiral in the corner of each piece of the banner and connect it to the three guiding lines”. Also verbatim: “Don’t be afraid to add some small breaks and tears into your design.”

  • The Historic Dockyard Chatham

Maritime heritage museum article on naval tattoo designs. Verbatim: records show designs that are "marks of love, loss and life events" while others demonstrate "national identities, religious faith, and patriotic pride"; "Each swallow represents 5,000 nautical miles in a sailor's career." One of the few tier 1 sources that speaks about tattoo subject matter as lived human experience rather than as art history.
