Protection

Tattoos worn for protective purpose. This is the best-evidenced non-aesthetic function in the batch, and both sources are tattoo-domain. Royal Museums Greenwich: a pig and a rooster tattooed on the feet were "said to protect a seaman from drowning". A trade source: wearing a sacred symbol "means devoting yourself to a sense of protection or paying homage to such an image". Registered as a theme of PURPOSE, which is why it sits beside subject-matter themes rather than inside them.

Cultural notes
Protective tattooing is the function most tightly bound to specific living traditions - Thai Sak Yant above all, already in T11.10's scope. This node covers the general purpose only. Any tradition-specific protective practice must be represented by a cultures record, never by attaching a tradition's meaning to this theme.

  • Royal Museums Greenwich

National Maritime Museum page. Verbatim: the word 'tattoo' is "derived from the Tahitian word 'tatau', meaning to mark"; a pig and a rooster tattooed on the feet were "said to protect a seaman from drowning"; a full-rigged ship, an anchor, a dragon and a shellback turtle each record a specific voyage or crossing. Establishes protective (apotropaic) intent inside the tattoo domain.

  • Tattoo Life Crew, Tattoo Life

Tattoo magazine gallery feature. Verbatim: "mystical tattoos represent deities, icons and sacred images from different cultures and places"; wearing such a symbol "means devoting yourself to a sense of protection or paying homage to such an image". The article names Buddha, Kali, Ganesha, Vishnu, mudras, the Fatima hand and mandalas - all LIVING religious material, which is why the concepts it supports carry cultural_review_required. TRANSCRIPTION NOTE: the published title reads "Spritual"; transcribed as the source spells it.
