Defines woodcut as a method of relief printing from a block of wood cut along the grain; the block is carved so the image stands out in relief, the relief surface is inked and printed under a press or by hand pressure. Distinguishes wood engraving, where the line is incised into the block rather than the background removed. Notes woodblock printing appeared in Europe from the twelfth century, on paper by the late fourteenth. Says nothing about tattooing.

States that engraving tattoos draw on metal or wood engravings typical of medieval European art and evoke antique prints, medieval illustrations and Renaissance engravings; that the defining visual elements are fine lines, hatching and delicate line shading producing great graphic refinement; and that typical subjects are portraits, animals, mythological scenes and religious subjects with a Byzantine flavour. Notes contemporary artists blending the style with film, TV and horror subjects. Does not separately define etching as distinct from engraving.
