What the research says
styles_seed- Family
- fine detail
- Line behavior
- small needle groupings such as 03RL, or a single needle; very thin line weight
- Visual traits
- thin precise clean lines; delicate look; light shading; suited to small and medium-sized pieces
- Shading behavior
- light whip shading or stipple shading, ideally with the same needle used for the line to avoid overworking the skin
- Palette tendencies
- black; grey
- Conflicts or cautions
- may heal faster because of lower ink saturation but may fade faster and need more touch-ups; UV exposure accelerates fading; execution errors are exposed because there is no shading to hide them and 'even a tiny shake looks huge in a thin line'. CULTURAL: the professional single-needle black-and-grey lineage this style descends from originates in East Los Angeles Chicano and prison tattooing - see style_single_needle.
- Composition tendencies
- small to medium-sized pieces [sourced: Tatuantes]

States that fine-line work uses a small needle grouping such as an 03RL or a single needle, very thin lines and light shading; that light whip shading or stipple shading with the same needle avoids overworking the skin; that fine-line tattoos may heal faster because of lower ink saturation but may fade faster and need more touch-ups, with UV exposure accelerating fading; and that the core difficulty is that 'even a tiny shake looks huge in a thin line'.

The page self-describes as a tattoo and body art resource site of trends, artist profiles and technical guides. The tier-2 assignment rests on those bylined technical guides and is a judgment call a reviewer could reasonably downgrade to tier 3; doing so would not move any style row out of the tier-1-2 count. Describes blackwork as combining solid areas with geometric patterns and abstract rhythms in full compositions; fineline as thin, precise and clean lines suited to small and medium pieces, demanding extreme control, where poor technique causes fading while correct depth and photoprotection preserve sharpness; and dotwork, placed within the ornamental/mandala category, as relying on dots, patterns and sacred geometry executed with millimetre precision from planned, measured layouts. Notes fineline shows mistakes most readily because it has no shading to hide them.

Jack Rudy states in his own words: 'A lot of East LA chicanos were coming in asking for more prison-style work with no color in it. We started doing black and gray, then we started making single needles right in the shop', and 'Modern single needle black and gray tattooing was born in our shop. No one was doing it at a professional shop at that time.' Establishes the origin of professional single-needle black-and-grey work in East Los Angeles Chicano and prison-tattoo demand, at Good Time Charlie's, in the 1970s.
