Chain

Linked metal chain, drawn as a border, a wrap, or a broken length. Named by doc 04's own motif list. THIN ROW: the only fetched attestation is as an optional embellishment on another motif - a compass “can be done in a realistic or old-school style, with added details such as anchors or chains.” No source states a meaning, and the bondage/freedom reading a reader will expect is NOT asserted here.

  • iNKPPL Tattoo Magazine

Tattoo magazine article on one motif. Verbatim: "The compass symbolizes direction, dedication to goals, protection, and luck", "Sailors believed that a compass tattoo protected them from danger, helped them return home, and brought good luck during voyages", and "It can represent not only physical journeys but also inner freedom." The page also states the transfer explicitly - the symbol "transcended maritime themes" and came to represent a search for a path in a metaphorical sense - which is why this batch treats the figurative reading as the source's claim rather than as an inference.

    Tier 3

HTDIO planning pack, vendored in this repository

NOT A WEB SOURCE and NOT EXTERNAL EVIDENCE - the project's own governing specification, read in-repo. It establishes only what THIS PROJECT models, never what is true of tattooing. Cited for exactly two things: (1) the motif subtype hierarchy used to populate the variants column, which it gives for Skull as Human (intact, cracked, decayed, burning, anatomical), Animal (ram, deer, bird, predator) and Stylized (traditional, gothic, cybernetic, ornamental, surreal); (2) the rule this whole batch implements, that relationships "must be explicit and queryable" and that one must not "bury important relationships only inside descriptive text". No symbolic or cultural claim is drawn from it.

Promoted from motifs_seed.common_styles of motif_chain ('american traditional'). Provenance inherited from the parent row(s): source_inkppl_compass; source_htdio_pack_doc_04; the first is carried in source_id. No new fact: this edge restates a value already present in the corpus. STRENGTH 0.5 set by the T11.11c rule: this pairing is asserted by ONE parent row's association column and by no second row; the pack's scale reads 0.5 as 'context-dependent'. Inputs are corpus counts only - no source count, tier or confidence is used.
